K is for Karma
Attention: This is not a peace sign!! I say this jokingly but with a little seriousness attached because I remember showing it to a friend and they said, "aye, that peace sign is dope, I want that one." I appreciated the complement towards my art and said thank you but had to give a friendly disclaimer that the thing they wanted was not a peace sign. Its a K in ASL (American Sign Language.) I've always been interested in language and learning and while I don't remember the specific moment in class of learning the ABCs in ASL, I remember giving a fuck. I understood the power of being able to communicate in multiple ways and I remember the feeling of wanting to learn more. I thought ASL was so dope.
Ever since learning the ABCs back in elementary school, it just stuck with me. I'm not fluent by any means, but I feel very attached to language and know some of the basics in ASL. Anyway, I say all of this to say: that is how the idea came to be of doing the K; it's because ASL was something I already had a connection to, not something I just randomly decided to put on a T-shirt. Everything is connected.
The long pink nails just add more 'me' in the piece. As soon as I got to college and was exposed to nails, I started getting them done quite consistently for the next five or so years to the point they just became apart of me, Karma with the long nails. Pink is my color, of course, so I had to make them pink.
And that's the explanation behind 'K.' It represents my love of knowledge and language and tells a little bit more about me and my style: long nails with some pink on, that's Karma.
